Emergency Management Inspires Me
Nov 23,2015My inspiration to pursue the field of Emergency Management stems from my personal life. I lived a nontraditional life and faced many obstacles that forced me to “think outside the box.” The loss of my stability at an early age forced me to survive in an adult world without proper guidance or mentorship. In the absence of my parents and intimate relationships, I began to mentor myself. I learned how to teach myself through the resources that were available to me in my surroundings. This included books, the internet, testimonies, communication, as well as trial and error. For example, when I became a mother at seventeen, I read Mayo Clinic books to help me learn how to care for her basic needs. I am a natural born survivor that has developed universal aptitudes throughout my life organically. Through my nontraditional journey, I feel that all of the obstacles I have faced in life were preparing me for my future career in Emergency Management. I am confident that I will contribute new ideas to the field of Emergency Management, learn how to develop my natural abilities, and teach others how to prepare adequately for a disaster before disaster strikes.
The field of Emergency Management has become one of the most vital departments due to the increase in natural and man-made disasters such as Hurricane Katrina or terrorism. As the complexity of disasters increase, the demand for innovators and analytical thinkers is vital to the infrastructure of the United States. This is my passion and separate experiment. My aspiration is to be in a position that forces me to use these critical thinking processes to empower the citizens of the United States of America.
My field of study has inspired me to analyze society from a perspective that is unique. Not only do I study the history of society and how we have evolved, but I also study how society adapts in the wake of a disaster. This is very beneficial to me because it contributes to my personal goal of understanding my natural born talent. I have always been different and I have realized social science education helps me to develop my fullest potential as a role model, mother, and leader.
I follow most of the current catastrophes that are transpiring within our nation and feel compelled to learn as much as I can about my degree field. I do not want to graduate college and be an ordinary worker that assists the disaster recovery operations. I aspire to graduate as the next leader of emergency preparedness. In my lifetime, I have learned that if you anticipate emergencies to happen, you will strive to be as prepared as possible beforehand. This mindset will help you avoid some unnecessary crises entirely.
Emergency Management will offer me a career that continually challenges my ability to approach problems in new and innovative ways. My skills will provide my nation with a leader that is passionate about protecting and empowering the citizens of America.
