A Journey Well Worth Taking

My journey to become a teacher started before I even knew I wanted to be a teacher. I have been a stay at home mother for eighteen years. My husband retired from the Air Force. But while he was active, I decided that our children would have a parent at home. My first child was a boy. I spent days playing and reading with him. I encouraged him to explore. I soon had my daughter. The three of us learned and grew together. My daughter was diagnosed with pervasive development disorder at two. She was put into special education preschool. I learned from her teacher about my daughter's diagnosis. I am still to this day impressed with my daughter's teacher.

My oldest son Caleb, was struggling with school. Sitting still was not something he could do. I decided to homeschool him. This was a great decision. I enjoyed the six years I taught him. During these six years, we had two more children and homeschooled his sisters as well. I had a great support group of fellow homeschoolers. I learned that each of my children learn differently. My husband received orders to Germany. This was an awesome experience. We learned a lot about the German culture. In Germany, we had another girl. I felt that I could not give my children everything they needed educationally. I sent them back to school; they flourished. I soon started college to become a teacher. I was so impressed with the abilities of my children's teachers. Watching them go that extra mile to help my children is moving.

My oldest daughter and third daughter are classified as autistic. I have been in every meeting for these two. I want to give back what I have received from such wonderful and loving teachers. It took me four years taking college classes online to acquire my Bachelor's degree in education. Juggling my family and completing assignments was a challenge that taught me that with perseverance I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. If you are on the fence about following your dream, I encourage to take the first step. With one step at a time you will reach your dream. Who knows you might even encourage someone along the way.
