HonorSociety.org Goes Behind the Scenes With the Press

Apr 11,2016

In March 2016, I had the honor of attending a political conference in Washington D.C. as part of the press because of HonorSociety.org’s standing in American education. I took in the events from the press bullpen. To the outside eye, press bullpens often look chaotic, reporters frantically plugging away at their keyboards or on the phone with their editors pleading for extra time or conveying what just happened. Being in this particular bullpen was an amazing experience, because I was able to see the news stories as they were happening, following all of the updates throughout the day. Along with being able to experience the event from the bullpen, I was able to have access to some of the speakers and politicians at the event for interviews and pictures.

This event gave me a new perspective on what goes on in politics and what goes on at these events as an insider. Being granted access to meet and interview our nations great politicians with different political affiliations or stages of their political career gave me a new appreciation for what goes on. I was excited to meet a representative from Nevada, Dina Titus, where HonorSociety.org is headquartered at. I was able to have a great conversation with her about our home state and to take a photo with her.

Politics is a sensitive subject for many people, but this event was not just about supporting one candidate over another -  it involved politicians from all sides. While in the press pit, you could see all of the reporters of every affiliation transcribing what was being said into articles, blurbs, tweets, and blog posts, all trying to get the latest and greatest message out there from the event. The feeling was truly electric being behind the scenes, learning and watching this take place in front of me. I was able to live stream from the press area and let our great viewers get a glimpse of the event and offer short snips of what happened throughout the day.

Fortunately, HonorSociety.org has been given opportunities to connect people, and is able to give great opportunities to grow and learn. The places that you can go to and the things you get to do just by being a part of HonorSociety.org is incredible, from member trips in some of our great cities to being able to meet like-minded people to signing up for a press pass and reporting on an event. Opportunities come from all different places. Sometimes you have to search for them and other times you stumble upon them. Take every day and every challenge with a smile on your face and a positive outlook. Each time you do something out of your comfort zone or something you have wanted to do, it helps you grow as a person and builds your skills. For me, I had always wanted to experience a press box experience and look forward to bring more interviews and reports from a press event in the future.
