Eastern Michigan University student receives scholarship from Honor Society

Jan 20,2014

Eastern Michigan University senior Ashley Childers was awarded the Undergraduate Achiever Scholarship from HonorSociety.org for the Fall 2013 semester.

The Honor Society is a national organization headquartered in Los Angeles, Calif., that recognizes collegiate academic success. Students that demonstrate academic excellence receive an invitation from the Honor Society to become a member. As a member, students receive information about scholarships, job openings and discounted rates on test preparations.

Childers, originally from Clinton, is a senior at EMU in the apparel, textiles, and merchandising program and currently holds a 3.97 GPA. She decided to apply for the $2,000 scholarship after becoming aware of the opportunity through the HonorSociety.org website. She is one of only two undergraduate members in the United States awarded the scholarship this semester.

“I receive the Pell Grant each semester, but this semester was different in terms of classes because I had to take five in order to graduate in December,” said Childers. “So I was very grateful that I had received this scholarship to offset my financial burden this semester.”

Along with her involvement in fashion, Childers spends time at the Michigan Humane Society in Westland, Mich. Her love for animals and drive to assist animals in need of a home is her passion. Each year, Childers organizes a donation drive to benefit the humane society.

Childers plans to graduate in December 2014, and hopes to open her own boutique, which will feature her clothing designs. She plans to donate a portion of her income to the Michigan Humane Society.

The Undergraduate Achiever Scholarship is awarded each semester to qualified members of the Honor Society, who have performed well academically and are highly involved in the local or campus community. In order to receive the scholarship undergraduate members must submit an application.
