Career Advice for Millennials
Sep 24,2015Think of your career as a series of experiences
It's not critical to stay with the same employer to have a good career. You need to collect experiences throughout your career, whether it be with 5 employers or 10. You need to be a lifelong learner in order to make an impact and feel accomplished. These multiple experiences expand your worldview and make you a more interesting person, which helps when trying to market yourself as a good candidate for a new job.
Find the right job and make an impact
Try not to let others push you into a job just to pay the bills. Research shows you won't last long there if you do. If you're passionate about your job, you won't mind working long hours. It's easier to make an impact and get the support of others at the job if you love what you do. This will make you more valuable to the employer as well, because they will value you more.
Measure your outcomes and build case studies
Most resumes look the same these days. You need to stand out by showing a company how you directly affected their income. Always think about measuring your projects in terms of revenue to justify promotions as well. If you really want to set yourself apart, create your own website. You can name the website after yourself and store everything you've accomplished there. By doing this, you can easily refer to your work.
Spend more time with people then your laptop
It's most important that you socialize in the workplace. It's always important to take advantage of break times to talk about things other than work. It's also good to have small office celebrations for birthdays, etc. Cali Williams Yost, author of "Tweak It: Make What Matters to You Happen Every Day" says, "As a rule of thumb you should only socialize with coworkers in situations where you are most likely to showcase your best behaviors." Some of the best places to socialize are at activities directly related to the company, such as company picnics, and other company-sponsored events.
Locate good Mentors
Most students aren't selective about their mentors and just feel fortunate to have one in the first place. You need to choose the right mentor , who you can support and who has supported you. The person should be someone in your industry who is living the lifestyle that you dream of. Then they can tell you exactly what you need to do each day to get to their level.
