Alpha Eta Mu Beta Rating, Reviews and Requirements. Is it worth it?

REQUIREMENTS

• Active membership shall be open to those full-time undergraduate students duly registered in Bioengineering or Biomedical Engineering program that has been accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET), who are ranked as juniors or seniors by their college and are in good and regular standing.
• Only those juniors who have maintained an average scholastic grade in the upper one fifth and those seniors who have maintained an average scholastic grade in the upper one third of the Biomedical Engineering class of which they are a member shall be eligible for active membership.
• To be considered juniors, students shall be in the next-to-last year of their curriculum or shall have completed the institution’s requirements for junior standing. To be considered seniors, students shall be in the last year of their curriculum or shall have completed the institution’s requirements for senior standing.
• Active membership shall also be open to graduate students duly registered in Bioengineering or Biomedical Engineering curriculum. To be eligible for membership, a graduate student
• Must be a candidate for a degree in Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering from a university with an ABET accredited undergraduate and/or graduate program
• Must have completed at least 12 semester hours of graduate courses for students in a Ph.D. program, or nine semester hours of courses in a Master’s degree program, six of which are Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering courses towards the degree;
• Must have a grade-point-average of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale and rank in the upper one-third of eligible graduate students.

SUMMARY

Alpha Eta Mu Beta is the National Biomedical Engineering Honor Society. Established in 1979, Alpha Eta Mu Beta was formed to recognize and encourage excellence in the field of Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering. Membership into Alpha Eta Mu Beta consists of those individuals in the field of Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering who through their attainments in college or in practice have manifested a deep interest and marked ability in their chosen life work. The purpose of Alpha Eta Mu Beta is to bring these individuals into closer union so as to promote an understanding of the profession. Membership to Alpha Eta Mu Beta is a privilege and an honor. Members of Alpha Eta Mu Beta are recognized in an outstanding manner for having conferred honor on their Alma Mater by distinguished scholarship, exemplary character, honorable activities, and leadership.

Through various development, training, networking and service opportunities, members of Alpha Eta Mu Beta are able to learn and grow. In this process, they develop critical lifelong skills that prepare them to excel for the post college environment or to transform individuals at their present jobs into leaders and innovators.

The field of Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering are constantly evolving, therefore over the years AEMB has transformed itself into a dynamic organization to meet the needs of its growing membership and alumni, the institutions that they serve and our society.

IN DEPTH HISTORY

Alpha Eta Mu Beta (ΑΗΜΒ or AEMB) is a biomedical engineering honor society founded by Dr. Daniel Reneau of Louisiana Tech University, United States, in 1979. The first chapter of AEMB was founded at Louisiana Tech University. Membership of AEMB is offered to the top fifth of juniors and top third of seniors in biomedical engineering, who have completed at least six semester credit hours (or the equivalent) of biomedical engineering courses.

Alpha Eta Mu Beta's mission is :​

• To encourage participation in those activities that may be beneficial to the profession of Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering.
• To further unify the student body of the department of Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering in presenting its needs and ideals to the faculty.
• To create a closer student-faculty relationship by periodically bringing together the thoughts and needs of both.
• To assist and cooperate with all organizations and persons working for the interests of Biomedical Engineering and  Bioengineering.
• To benefit its members by the association and experience that can come from bringing together a group with similar interests, objectives and abilities.
• To promote the professional development and welfare of its members.

OUR REVIEW  

Observation #1: For membership criteria, regarding undergrad, the society states that they must be in the upper ⅕ of their class, whereas the criteria for graduate students seems much more rigid: they must hold a 3.75-4.0. Usually, the requirements for undergrad would be more rigorous.

Observation #2: Other than promoting an understanding of the profession, there is not much detail on how the society impacts campus life at large.

Observation #3: A niche community for an elite group of students, such as Biomedical engineering students, is well-received and needed on most campuses!
